Resident Advisor Podcast 038 - Stacey Pullen

This week's RA podcast is from Detroit techno legend Stacey Pullen.

Born into a musical family – his dad was in a Motown group called The Capitols – Pullen has been playing music since a young age, first gravitating toward the drums, playing the snare drum in high school and at Tennessee State University. "Music chose me" as Pullen puts it. But it was the first wave of Detroit techno that really got his motor running: back in the day he used to make eight hour trips back to the city just to hear Derrick May spin at the Music Institute. Fast forward fifteen years and Pullen is acknowledged as a pillar of the second wave of Detroit techno alongside the likes of Carl Craig and Underground Resistance. Though a little quieter on the production front of late, Pullen is still clocking up the frequent flyer miles as a DJ, spinning his trademark wide-ranging sets of house and techno around the world. His DJ philosophy? "I don't really classify music," says Pullen. "I didn't even know electro was electro until someone told me. I enjoy music for what it is. In clubs a lot of people ask ‘What are you gonna play tonight?" and I never know. I just play from the heart. It's house, techno, broken beat or whatever: if the vibe is right I do it."

Pullen bring his open-minded attitude to his RA mix. One minute you're listening to vocal house, the next deep techno, and thanks to his impeccable mixing skills, you don't even know how you got there. Impressive.

"In_Come" is probably my favourite here with its lo-fi, yet tight, crisp groove, slick heads down drum programming and moodymanesque bassline. The fifth Poker Flat statement features Steve’s Berlin based inmates such as Guido Schneider, Martin Landsky and Märtini Brös as well as internatinally well reputed producers like Trentemøller, John Tejada, Luciano, Patrick Chardronnet or Martin Buttrich and highly talented newcomers like Argy, Dan Berkson & James What, Limacon, Philippe Autuori, Sian and Jamie Jones.

Poker Flat welcomes Martin Buttrich. The Hannover (Germany) based producer is the ingenious mastermind behind the Time Tools studio and co-producer for high profile artists like Timo Maas or Loco Dice. Although he's been working as a producer for more than ten years, he only recently started to release under his real name and dropped 12"es on Four.Twenty (2004) and on Carl Craig's Planet-E ("Full Clip", 2006) and delivered a remix for O'Brien-Docker ("Totally Alright"), before he joined Poker Flat for an exclusive Track ("Snapshots") on the upcoming Poker Flat Volume 5 album. Now we are proud to present "Cloudy Bay" his debut EP for Poker Flat. Once more the new 3-tracker proves his enormous skills. "Cloudy Bay" is a catchy and simply beautiful track with exciting strings and a wicked break which bring up the right dose of ecstasy on the floor. Massive tune! The B-side holds two more high-spirited tracks with "What's Your Name" being a bit more relaxed and deep, while "Lazy Bastard" edges

upwards again to a good pace with a great arrangement and a 100% positive vibe. Fantastic release by a great producer!

After his groundbreaking debut album "Focus On: Guido Schneider" (pfrcd17/pfrlp17) in summer, Guido Schneider returns with a new stunning EP on Poker Flat! Guido has been quite busy this year with recording the album and touring the world with his hypnotizing DJ set and his amazing live-set, with the highlight being his residency at Ibiza's famous DC10 club.

The new EP is another proof of Guido's great production skills and brings two excellent tracks which explore his signaturesound even further. The titletrack "Transmission" is an (almost) pure rhythmic and percussive affair, showcasing a vast array of drums from kongas to bongos, from sticks to shakers and builds a hypnotizing highly energetic soundscape. A buzzing chant by Florian Schirmacher, Guido's former partner in the "Glowing Glisses" project, adds a "sacral" atmosphere to the track. "Halo" on the b-side still manoeuvers through mainly percussive terrain, but contains more impulsive, twisted and funky elements. Check the well timed cue of the deep bassline - this is ace and gives this track an extra claim to fame.

Minilogue - Hitchhiker's Choice: Film Clip

I'm a really big fan of Minilogue with 'The Leopard' being one of my favourite tracks this year. They have come a long way in such a short space of time bridging deep house and minimal. The track featured in the video is 'Small Town Beauty' which can be found on Crosstown Rebels. Minilogue have recenlty completed a new double album/DVD which will be released next year, but they are looking for a label to release it on!
